Episode 3 of ThisGen Podcast, created by Rimah Jabr.

In this episode, Rimah sits down with sound designers Olivia Shortt and Elisheba Ittoop to discuss mentorship, script analysis beyond Shakespeare, and rethink our relationship to sound. We explore the concept ‘theatre of the mind’ and the role of sound design in creating space in the mind.

“ThisGen Fellowship has given me structure in a way that works well for me. I like a little bit of structure, but not necessarily a lot of structure. That’s the way my brain sometimes works - sometimes I’m all over the place, and sometimes I’m really focused... With fellowships and programs like this, I can take things in my own way, at my own pace, in my own timeline, and that’s made learning more fun. Even though there are still expectations to a degree, whether it’s checking in with Why Not, or talking to Elisheba, or going to these masterclasses, there’s still a level of flexibility, and I just appreciate that.” - Olivia Shortt

The Significant Role of a Sound Designer

RIMAH: Hello and welcome to ThisGen podcast. I’m your host, Rimah Jabr. With me today the two brilliant artist, Olivia Short, a sound designer based in Toronto, and her mentor, the world-class sound designer Elisheba Ittoop from New York. Welcome and how are you doing?

ELISHEBA : Hey, pretty good!

RIMAH: I would like to start with something really, I’m fascinated by, which is the concept of a spatial sense and how that influences the soundscapes. In a podcast we can be anywhere because all we need is a soundscape, right? If we haven’t had this pandemic, and we would meet in person, where would we go? It has to be in Canada because it’s easier for me.

ELISHEBA: [laughs]  I don’t I don’t know Canada. So I think I’d be so open to to you guys telling me where to go.

OLIVIA: Then we should be in Kensington Market because that’s usually where I take people their first time in Toronto at least. Instead of a kitschy feel to it, they have like pedestrian Sundays, so only you know there’s no cars

ELISHEBA: Ugh, sounds awesome so far. [laughs]
