about

What does it mean to be mentored? How can artists bridge the gap to the next stage in their career and develop their vision? Join Toronto-based theatre director, playwright, and Ph.D. student Rimah Jabr as she interviews Fellows and Mentors from Why Not Theatre’s inaugural ThisGen Fellowship – a program that recognizes and supports promising theatre practitioners by helping to elevate them to the next stage in their career.

ThisGen Podcast delves into the minds of this cohort of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Colour) artists, inviting listeners into the artists’ worlds through their work, processes, and aspirations. Engage in complex conversations about art and the industry, and discover how mentorship can address systemic barriers to access and re-imagine the future of leadership in Canadian theatre.

Shining the spotlight on the Fellows and their Mentors, Rimah meets with artists from disciplines such as dramaturgy, design, production management, and more, to discuss local and global issues – such as mentorship, coaching, childcare, leadership, expectations of Canada’s art institutions, and more.

“For many artists, making art is a matter of life and death. Furthermore, networking and mentorship are more than just working with someone with more experience than ourselves. It is a way to belong to a community, finding a place for us within a network of artists. Building on ThisGen Fellowship through this podcast and other opportunities will help develop the vision that BIPOC female and women-identifying artists have for themselves and the younger generation. Join me in conversation with the Fellows to hear about their journeys, the challenges they face, and their aspirations for a distinctive future. Most importantly, join us in celebrating the similarities and the differences that make each one of them unique.”
