CODE

by Nicolas Billon

Reuniting the award-winning collaboration of Why Not’s Artistic Director Ravi Jain and Governor General’s Award-winning writer Nicolas Billon (Greenland, Iceland, and Faroe Islands), CODE is a gripping new play that frames computer code as the universal language and currency of power.

After an artificial superintelligence is accidentally released into the ‘wild’ of the internet, a chase ensues to recapture it. But how will it treat its creators? With malevolence, benevolence, or indifference? Finding inspiration in the biblical tale of The Tower of Babel, CODE investigates the moral conundrums raised by the creation of a new intelligence.

This project is part of Why Not’s MAKE stream of activities. MAKE projects are created and produced by us, often touring across the country and the world.

Development partners include the Stratford Festival, as well as Barbican Centre, Stanford Live, and Luminato.

In October 2019, we shared an early insight into the evolution of CODE at the Barbican Centre (London, UK) for a week of research and development, where Ravi and Nicolas revealed the discoveries they’re making in shaping this prescient piece of theatre. Learn more here.

In 2018, Ravi and Nicolas spent a week in residency at Stanford University supported by Stanford Live, meeting with leading researchers and academics in the field of artificial intelligence.
