Annabella Piugattuk

ThisGen 2021 Cultural Leadership Fellow

Based in: Iqaluit, Nunavut

Annabella Piugattuk is an internationally celebrated actor, born and raised in Igloolik, Nunavut. She is lead actress in The Snow Walker (directed by Charles Martin Smith, 2004), The West (Executive Produced by Steven Spielberg, 2006), Hunt (directed by Jordan Tanahill, 2012). She is a regular and much loved Emcee for Alianait Festival – Iqaluit’s annual music festival. She most recently hosted the first online pandemic edition of Alianait. 

For the past 12 years, Annabella has worked for the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation, hosting the popular children’s show Takuginai, a cooking show called Niqitsiaq and an adult learning show called Uakallanga!. She is currently producer and host of a live Inuktitut phone-in show that covers current events called Qanuq Isumavit? 

Annabella is a dedicated member of the Inuit community of Nunavut, having been a board member of Qaggiavuut! – Nunavut’s Inuit performing arts society. She has worked on anti-poverty initiatives and at Iqaluit’s library. She is also an avid learner of Inuit performance – drumming and singing – as well as the expansion of her Inuktitut skills. She is dedicated to always learning more about the proper use of terms and grammar and is a part of the Inuit movement to make Inuktitut the working language of Nunavut. Annabella is a single mother of two daughters, who she raises in Iqaluit. She enjoys surrounding her children in their culture, sewing, reading, hunting, fishing and cooking for them.

Annabella would like to continue learning about the film industry, how to edit, how to be a camera operator, editing, sound and lighting, she hopes to get more tools under her belt to be able to do many things in the film industry and or to understand how all these work together in harmony.
