Benevolence Hall wins Inaugural Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Innovative Experience
June 24, 2024 – Toronto, ON
Why Not Theatre is thrilled to announce Benevolence Hall, an installation created by Director of Producing and Creative Associate Kevin Matthew Wong, has been honoured with the 2024 Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Innovative Experience. The project was made in collaboration between Broadleaf Creative, in association with Toronto History Museums and Why Not Theatre.
Benevolence Hall is the inaugural winner in this new award category at Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts’ Dora Mavor Moore Awards. The award was presented on June 24, 2024 at the 44th Annual Dora Mavor Moore Awards, hosted by Ryan G. Hinds and featuring award-winning music director and composer Adam Sakiyama, at the historic Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre.
Benevolence Hall is a free community space and art installation that celebrates the journey of Hakka Canadians to Tkaronto. 2000-years ago Hakka began an epic series of migrations, pushed by the forces of economic and political turmoil, violence and multiple upheavals. Hakka migration continues to this day. Starting in Northern China in 200 BC, the Hakka continued Southward through China and eventually scattered around the world to corners as distinct as Jamaica, Trinidad, Peru, Mauritius, South Africa, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and yes, Canada. This project is part of the Toronto History Museums’ Artist Mentorship Showcase: The Reset with Mentor Yung Yemi. Kevin Matthew Wong’s Benevolence projects have been created in residency at Why Not Theatre.
